How to get transcripts and captions

Pick a platform. Follow the tiny steps. You can do it!

01YouTubeFor any video that has captions
  1. Open the video and open its full description.
  2. Choose Show transcript. A text panel will open beside or below the video.
  3. Select the words you need, copy them, and paste them into StudyScriptor.

Little note: No Show transcript button? That video probably does not have a transcript you can view.

02VimeoFor videos whose owner enabled a transcript
  1. Open the video on Vimeo.
  2. Choose Transcript below the player. The transcript opens on the right.
  3. Read, search, or select the permitted text and paste it into StudyScriptor.

Little note: No Transcript button means the owner did not make a transcript available.

03TEDFor most TED and many TEDx talks
  1. Open the talk on TED.com.
  2. Choose Read Transcript under the video, then pick a language if you need one.
  3. Select the transcript text, copy it, and paste it into StudyScriptor.

Little note: On a phone, the transcript may cover the video. That is normal.

04LoomFor Loom videos with transcription enabled
  1. Open the Loom video and choose Transcript in the side panel.
  2. Choose the Copy button above the transcript to copy all of it.
  3. Paste the copied words into StudyScriptor.

Little note: Video owners on eligible plans can also use the three-dot menu and choose Download captions.

05ZoomFor cloud recordings you own or may access
  1. Sign in to Zoom and open Recordings & Transcripts, then Cloud recordings.
  2. Open the meeting. Choose the recording thumbnail to read the transcript.
  3. If you are allowed to download it, use the download button beside Audio transcript. The file is VTT.

Little note: The host controls whether viewers may see or download a transcript.

06Microsoft Stream / TeamsFor work or school videos you are allowed to use
  1. Open the recording in your browser and choose Transcript at the top right.
  2. If you can edit the video, open Video settings, then Transcript and captions.
  3. Open the three-dot menu beside the transcript and choose Download. The file is WebVTT.

Little note: Only people with edit permission can download the caption file.

07TikTokFor your own posts, or posts you have permission to use
  1. For your own post, choose the caption language before posting so TikTok can make captions.
  2. Review and fix the captions in TikTok before you publish.
  3. TikTok does not provide a general copyable transcript for viewers. Keep your script, or upload an owned recording to StudyScriptor.

Little note: Do not use a downloader to bypass a creator’s controls.

08InstagramFor your own Reels and Stories
  1. For a Reel, open Advanced settings and turn on Show captions before sharing.
  2. For a Story, open the sticker tray and choose the Captions sticker. Check the words before posting.
  3. Instagram does not provide a general transcript download for viewers. Keep your script, or upload an owned recording to StudyScriptor.

Little note: If it belongs to somebody else, ask the creator for their script or permission.

09FacebookFor videos you uploaded or have permission to edit
  1. Open your video post and choose the options menu, then Edit post.
  2. Choose Add captions. Facebook accepts an SRT caption file.
  3. Keep your original SRT file and upload that file to StudyScriptor.

Little note: Facebook does not provide a general copyable transcript for every video viewer.

10TwitchFor streams with CC, especially your own recordings
  1. Look for the CC button in the Twitch player. It appears only when captions are available.
  2. Twitch does not provide a general transcript panel or caption download for viewers.
  3. For your own stream, keep a local recording and upload it to StudyScriptor for transcription.

Little note: Ask the streamer before reusing their words or recording.
